Half the Whirlpool dryers we repair around Olympia failed because of the vent, not the dryer.

A Whirlpool dryer is a simple machine that lives in a hard climate. Between October and May the air it pulls in is wet, the lint it produces is heavy, and the vent it pushes through often runs a long way under a deck or through a crawlspace before it reaches daylight. The result is an exhaust path that slowly narrows until the heater cycles on its high-limit, the thermal fuse blows, and the dryer tumbles cold. That story is behind a large share of the Whirlpool calls we take from Mud Bay to the Eastside.
The rest is ordinary wear: belts, idler pulleys and drum rollers on machines past ten years, gas valve coils on Duets that heat for a while and then stop, moisture sensor bars coated in fabric softener.
On an electric Whirlpool the heating element has usually opened, or the thermal fuse on the blower housing has blown because the vent is restricted. We meter the element, the fuse, the high-limit thermostat and the cycling thermostat, replace what has failed, and then gauge exhaust flow at the outside hood, because a new fuse in a choked system pops again within a month.
Duet gas models light fine for a few minutes, then run cool until the load is damp at the end. Nearly always one of the two gas valve solenoid coils is weakening with heat, though a tired igniter or dirty flame sensor mimics it. We observe the burner across a whole cycle, replace both coils, and on propane systems out toward Griffin check orifice and flame color as well.
A high squeal that starts cold and fades as the machine warms is the idler pulley bearing; a thump once per turn is a drum roller with a flat spot or a glide worn through. Whirlpool sells these as kits, and on any dryer past eight years we renew rollers, idler and belt in one go, since opening the cabinet twice for three cheap parts helps nobody.
The motor runs while the drum stays put: the belt has snapped or jumped off the idler. Sometimes a broken belt is the whole story. Sometimes the belt broke because a roller seized and dragged it, so we check the rollers before closing up. If the motor hums without turning at all, the start winding or the centrifugal switch is the problem and we test the motor before condemning it.
Whirlpool's moisture sensing relies on two metal bars inside the drum. Coated in dryer-sheet residue they read dry too soon and shut off with damp clothes; shorted by a stray bobby pin they read wet forever. We clean and test the bars, check the harness to the control, and adjust the vent if a slow exhaust is what is really stretching the cycle out.
After a PSE outage the dryer shows nothing, or a code, or runs without the panel responding. On electric models we first check whether one leg of the 240-volt feed has dropped, since one open breaker leg lets the drum turn while the heater gets nothing. When the control board has truly lost a relay, we replace it; when it is the breaker, you pay for the diagnostic alone.
| Code | What it usually means | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| AF | Airflow through the dryer is restricted, in most cases by a lint-choked vent, a crushed transition duct or a stuck hood flap. | Gauge the exhaust flow, clean out the sections we can reach, and say whether the duct run needs a full cleaning. |
| L2 | The control is not seeing full voltage on the second leg of the 240-volt supply, so the drum turns but the heater cannot run. | Test at the terminal block and outlet; the fix is usually the breaker or the cord, not the dryer. |
| F22 / F:22 | The exhaust thermistor reads open, so the control cannot judge outlet temperature. | Meter the thermistor and harness and replace the sensor when it is out of range. |
| F01 / F:01 | The main electronic control has detected an internal fault, often after a power event. | Confirm supply and connections, then replace the control board if the fault is real and repeatable. |
The $99 diagnostic pays for a technician with a meter at your dryer and a clear answer about what failed and what the repair will cost, written down before anything is touched. Answer yes and the $99 you already paid becomes part of that repair figure; answer no and $99 is where the bill ends. No travel line anywhere inside the ring we run from the Lacey line. A Whirlpool dryer still inside the maker's own term gets that pointed out before any part is ordered.
Hours are weekdays 7:30 to 5:30 and Saturday until 1; dryers are scheduled inside the week. The printed warranty term is on your invoice, and an ordered board or motor means a second trip that never appears on your bill. Landlords with Eastside duplexes can say yes over text and the invoice arrives by email.
Because the air cannot get out. The thermal fuse sits on the blower housing and opens when exhaust air overheats, which happens when the vent is long, crushed, lint-packed or ends in a hood with a stuck flap. A new fuse with the vent untouched lasts a few weeks. We gauge the flow and describe what the duct needs.
Probably not. When a gas Duet warms briefly and then stops, the gas valve solenoid coils are the usual culprit; they weaken as they warm and stop holding the valve open. The igniter still glows, the flame sensor still works, and the burner just will not relight. We replace both coils together, since they age as a pair.
We clear the section behind and inside the dryer, check the transition duct and measure airflow at the outside hood as part of every dryer repair. A long run under a deck or through a crawlspace that is packed solid is a duct-cleaning job, and we say plainly when that, rather than another part, is what you need.
If you are on Steamboat Island, around Summit Lake, out Delphi Road or on much of Black Lake, very likely yes. A gas dryer built for natural gas and run on propane without the conversion orifice burns hot with a yellow flame and soots the burner. We check the orifice stamp and the flame on every propane dryer we open.
The basic electric top-of-the-line and the modest ones alike often run twenty years with a belt and roller kit somewhere in the middle. The electronic Duet and Cabrio models depend on a control board that is the usual retirement cause. If the drum, motor and cabinet are sound, almost any Whirlpool dryer repair is worth doing.

The price goes on paper before a screw comes out.
Ring or use the form; a phone photo of the display or the model sticker saves a step. We ring back with an arrival window and text again as the van pulls off Woodland Square Loop.
The technician tests the suspect part with instruments, tells you in plain words what gave out, and writes the repair down as a single price. Your $99 is already inside that number.
Fill valves, defrost heaters, igniters, drum rollers, drain pumps, relays — the things well water, salt air and PSE outages wear out on this shore of the inlet. If we have to order something, the second trip is ours to make, not yours to pay for.
You watch the machine finish a whole cycle, the kick panels and the floor go back the way they were, and the warranty term is typed onto the invoice.
Tell us over the phone. For $99 a technician tests the machine and writes the repair down as one price with that $99 folded in, and the invoice carries the warranty term in print.
