A propane dryer that had stopped heating entirely. The igniter was cracked, but the real find was in the vent: a mouse nest the size of a softball packed against the hood, with fir needles behind it. We replaced the igniter, cleared the run, fitted a hood with a proper flap, and mentioned that the gap under the siding where the mice got in was worth a look.
The refrigerator's display went blank during three days on a portable generator and never came back when PSE restored power. The main board had lost its power supply section. A Delphi refrigerator survives outages, generators and woodsmoke. The outage stops it; the generator's rough power scrambles its board; the woodstove across the room fills its condenser with fine ash and dog hair until the fan labors. An inverter generator or a standby unit with a transfer switch produces power close to the utility's. A basic portable generator often does not, and refrigerator boards are the first casualty. Braided stainless hoses resist chewing better than rubber, and sealing the wall gap behind the machine with steel wool and caulk closes the highway. Keep pet food out of the laundry room. Igniters are ceramic and hate thermal shock. A dryer in an unheated laundry room starts cold every time, and a hood clogged with needles makes the dryer run hot, so the igniter cycles more often.
