Cooper Point Road runs up the spine of the peninsula, and its houses split into two families. South of The Evergreen State College are 1970s and 1980s subdivisions on city water and sewer, plus student and faculty rentals that turn over each June. North of the college, off Overhulse Road and down toward Sunset Beach, are custom homes on acreage from the 1990s and 2000s, each with a well in glacial till, a septic field, and often a propane tank behind the garage. That well water carries iron and manganese, so most houses run a softener or iron filter, and appliances downstream wear in ways city machines never do. Nearly every one keeps a second fridge in the garage.

A built-in refrigerator that stayed silent once PSE restored the line after a November storm. The compressor hummed and clicked; the inverter board had lost its drive output. Usually. Most refrigerators simply restart when power returns. The ones that do not have typically lost a start relay, a control board or an inverter to the surge when the lines came back.
