Summit Lake Road leaves US-101 on the Shelton side and drops through second-growth timber to a lake ringed by Summit Lake Shore Road. The houses began as 1950s fishing cabins, and many have been rebuilt or added onto into year-round homes, though the lots stayed steep and the kitchens small. Stairs run from road to house and house to dock; an appliance delivery here is an event. Every property draws from a private well with the iron and hardness of the local till, drains to a septic tank squeezed onto the lot, and cooks and dries with propane. The PSE line runs through the trees, and Summit Lake is routinely among the last places to get power back.

A twenty-four-inch propane range whose burners lit with tall yellow flames and whose oven never quite reached temperature. The previous owner had brought it from a house with natural gas and connected it as it was. We fitted the propane orifices for burners and oven, set the regulator, adjusted the shutters and confirmed a blue flame on every burner. The owner had assumed all propane ranges cooked that way.
Silent after a three-day outage, then a hum and a click every few minutes once power returned. The start relay had failed and the overload had opened protecting the compressor. We replaced both, tested the compressor draw, and cleaned a condenser that had been collecting woodstove ash for a decade. The refrigerator was cold again before the owner finished restocking from the cooler.

Farther than most cabins allow, but a foot of clearance and a simple heat shield make a real difference. A refrigerator beside a hot stove runs its compressor far more than it should and dies young. If the layout cannot change, an annual coil cleaning and a check of the door seals keep the strain manageable.

You can, but the sand goes into the pump. A quick shake on the deck saves the impeller, and a mesh bag for the sandiest loads helps more. When the pump does fail, replacing it is a modest job, and we clear the trap and hose at the same time so the next handful of sand has somewhere to collect.

Clearing the lint trap and checking the hood flap moves freely are safe and helpful. Pulling the dryer to reach the duct in a tight cabin space is harder, and long runs under a deck need tools to clear properly. If loads are still damp once the trap and hood are clear, call us for the rest.

Run a final cycle, pull the filter and sponge out the sump, leave the door cracked and shut off the supply. A dry sump cannot freeze or grow a film, and a pump that is dry over the winter does not seize. Owners who do this rarely need us in April.
