Frigidaire is the refrigerator in the rental near Evergreen, the top freezer in the Bigelow duplex, and the Gallery side-by-side in the Ken Lake kitchen that was remodeled in 2008. It is a sensible, mid-priced machine, and it fails in sensible, mid-priced ways. The evaporator coil frosts over because a defrost heater or its thermostat gave out, air stops moving through the frost, and the top compartment warms while the freezer carries on.

The freezer's back wall wears a coat of frost, the fresh-food compartment is warm, and everything seemed fine two weeks ago. On Frigidaire the heater at the bottom of the evaporator opens, or the bimetal thermostat clipped to the coil fails, and frost builds until air cannot pass. OP means a temperature sensor is reading open, SH means shorted, and the letters appear in place of a temperature for whichever compartment's sensor has failed. The thermistors themselves are inexpensive; the trouble is that a bad one makes the control misjudge cooling and defrost. We meter the sensor, confirm its reading against the chart, and replace it.
